Chicken Cast Ep5: New chicken run, 5 things to know before you get chickens, All about chicken feed

Update: – the building of the chicken run, waiting on eggs, water note

Relaxing in their addition

They still love to huddle together

The roof is made from lightweight plastic sheeting.

Feature 1:  story of leaving chickens at the animal shelter;  5 things you should know before getting chickens

  1. Chickens are messy birds – they indescriminately poops everywhere, they tear up bedding, grass flower bed
  2. Chickens attract pests – flies, mites, mice rats, predators – because of their presence and food – diatomaceous earth
  3. Know what you will do with them after they stop laying – Egg laying will eventually slow down during winter months, but as they age.  Why are you keeping them?  for pets, for eggs, for food?
  4. They will grow up from being cute fuzzy little babies – the puppy syndrome, baby animals are cute no doubt.  They pull at your heart strings as helpless little creatures and make you want to shelter them and cuddle them.. As they get older and more independent, they develop personalities and are not as cute.
  5. Responsibilities - let them out & in daily, feed, water, coop cleaning, when you go away

Feature 2:   Chicken Feed

Bags of Feed – What is feed made from?

Essential ingredients:

  1. Carbohydrates – energy for the chickens, Wheat, corn, barley – grains  - I’ve also noticed molasses extract in my feed
  2. Fats – dense calories for energy – can be from plants, seeds such as sunflower, etc.
  3. Proteins – building blocks for muscle, organs, and feathers – Comes from soybeans, cotton seed and sunflower seed – be careful of foods  that use animal protein if that concerns you.
  4. Minerals – Most widely know is Calcium – more important after 20 weeks when they are into egg production.  Not needed and actually harmful in younger peeps and pullets.
  5. Vitamins – just like us, chickens need vitamins.  A,D,E, and K are essential and feeds use supplements to provide lots of these

Forms of the feed:

  1. Mash – the most unprocessed of feed, mostly raw materials
  2. Crumble – processed pellets that are crushed up.  Good for feeding young chickens who can’t take pellets due to size
  3. Pellets – pressed together food that is cylinder shaped and solid.  Looks like small pill caplets.
